Metalheadz vibes IIIINCOMING!
Doc Scott (31 Records | UK)
A true veteran and leading tastemaker in D&B, Doc Scott has been an essential and pivotal figure in the scene since before its inception and continues to push things forward. Founding member of ‘A Bunch Of Cuts’, his DJ sets in the mid-90s became legendary, notably at the Metalheadz Blue Note sessions and ‘Speed’. Although primarily a DJ, his productions are definitive classics within the scene, such as ‘Here Comes The Drumz’ on Reinforced, the first ever Metalheadz release ‘VIP Drumz’, to the more mellow sounds of ‘Tokyo Dawn’ on Good Looking Records. His own label 31 Records, sparked by Scott’s ground-breaking ‘Shadow Boxing’, has also been a hub for new talent, pushing some of the biggest artists today in their early days. Having recently re-launched the label, Om Unit’s remix of ‘Shadow Boxing’ is the first release of 2014, with many others to follow. The New Year also marks a fresh start for Doc Scott, as he makes his long awaited return to the studio.
Bailey (Ministry of Sound / Serato / Metalheadz | UK)
Bailey is a presenter at Ministry of Sound Radio, former multi award winning presenter for BBC Radio 1Xtra and BBC Radio 1, Serato Icon plus resident DJ for Metalheadz. He’s recorded tracks for many artists including Goldie, Roni Size, A Guy Called Gerald, Chipmunk, Nas & Damian Marley. Bailey’s great passion is to be the best possible DJ playing the full circumference of Drum & Bass confirmed by a phenomenal tally of bookings stretching around the globe.
His Story Bailey’s fixation with electronic dance music began in the early 80s when Street Sounds Electro Volume 1 spun into his hands whilst at school. The beats and scratching he heard on that tape plus the break dancing he saw on the streets inspired him to get involved in this new Hip Hop culture. Bailey’s South London hometown was filled with sound systems’ grooves, so he stepped up playing at local house parties. Bailey also sought out warehouse parties sampling Acid House, Detroit Techno, and Hardcore – the emergent sounds of the late 80s/early 90s. The Breakbeat element in this new sound captivated Bailey, ultimately leading him into the world of Drum & Bass.
On the Decks Bailey gained momentum as a DJ recording mixtapes for friends, playing wine bars, dance halls and pirate radio stations. After a chance meeting with DJ’s Kemistry & Storm they tuned into his show and recruited him for Goldie’s legendary Metalheadz club nights in 1995. To this day, Bailey remains a Metalheadz resident DJ. He also plays Fabio’s long standing weekly club night Swerve and regularly tours the world as a guest with other established Drum & Bass outfits. As for Bailey’s skills when he’s behind the turntables. Always an alchemist in the mix, he creates sonic landscapes as his sheer mixology elevates him above the crowd of DJ’s. He is one of a handful of successful DJ’s to gain fame without the help of production credits. His recordings, mainly in the form of traditional DJ’s mixes have been produced for Metalheadz, the front cover CDs of various music magazines, a compilation for French owned Black Label on Sony’s Music Garden imprint, a mix called Soul Thunder for the renowned U.S label Breakbeat Science to name a few.
On Radio On Digital On Line In 2002 Bailey was selected to present his weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1Xtra running for 10 years; broadcast world-wide each and every Wednesday from 10pm as well as a shared slot on BBC Radio 1. The show has been extremely successful winning Bailey and 1Xtra many awards including Best Radio Show at Knowledge’s D&B Awards, Best Radio Station at The National Drum & Bass Awards (twice) alongside other triumphs. In 2013 Bailey started a new weekly show on Ministry of Sound Radio presenting live every Tuesday from 5pm propelling him once again into the world of broadcasting.
In the Studio Bailey began warming to life as producer/DJ in 2003 when he produced a track for Roni Size’s Full Cycle. His first steps into the world of production occurred by mistake. Bailey had requested a tune from the Full Cycle crew. Instead of the track, he received gold dust – a CD of samples to make a remix. So Bailey gave it a shot. The result, a rework of Forget Me Knots by Roni Size was immediately signed to the label. To date, Bailey’s produced tracks for many labels including Metalheadz, C.I.A, A Guy Called Gerald’s imprint Protechshon and remixed for artists such as Nas & Damain Marley, Chipmunk plus producing a house track with Melissa Molinaro.
Up in the Dance Bailey has attained Drum & Bass’s stratosphere. DJing far flung events in Costa Rica, South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, America and Europe he’s had legions of fans screaming for rewinds. His skillz have earned him what every DJ in the world craves – recognition and most importantly respect. That’s why in the dance they all chant, “Bailey! Bailey! Bailey!”
Ed Rush (Virus / Metalheadz | UK)
There aren’t many artists who can claim to have changed the face of a genre of music, let alone to have changed that face more than once. Ed Rush, however, is an exception to that rule. Ever since his first production outings alongside his neighbor (and infamous owner of No U Turn Records), Nico Sykes, Ed Rush has consistently proven he has the ideas and attitude to transform drum & bass and is never afraid to push that infamous envelope.
Moving through the sounds of hip hop and electro in his early musical years, like many of his peers Ed Rush became fascinated with the burgeoning rave scene that was blowing up his hometown of London. The breakneck speed chopped breakbeats and piles of sub-low bass appealed greatly, and it wasn’t long before Ed Rush had convinced Nico to work on some tracks with him. The first result of their production partnership, of course, being the immense ‘Bludclot Artattack’, an out-and-out darkside jungle classic which marked a new era in hardcore, pushing the music into the realms of what we now know as drum & bass.
Hooking up with another legend of the drum & bass fraternity, DJ Trace, Ed Rush began to hone his style and it wasn’t long before a fresh sound reared its ugly head. Blasting out of the Ed Rush studio setup like a breakbeat bullet, ‘The Mutant’ became another classic track and was swiftly followed by ‘Guncheck’, an instantly recognizable Ed Rush piece packed full of attitude and bashy basslines.
Fully immersed in crafting a style which was to become known throughout the world as Techstep, Ed Rush’s rise to prominence was now inevitable. Releases on Grooverider’s Prototype imprint and Goldie’s Metalheadz all confirmed his place as one of the leading producers in the new school of drum & bass elite. Not only was he making great music, but he was continuing to break new ground with his ideas and production techniques; new ground which would forever change the sound of drum & bass.
However, as we all know, it was Ed Rush’s team up with another great musical mind, Optical, that unleashed upon the world an album, a label and an audiological echo that would inspire thousands of copycat producers and spawn an entire generation of artists who, even a decade later, would still strive to come close to that Virus sound.
Dropping their immense debut album, ‘Wormhole’, upon an unsuspecting scene, Ed Rush & Optical literally created an entirely new set of rules for succeeding in drum & bass: Take a set of tracks considered too edgy for the major players of the time, add your own label and a pinch of self determination and you end up with what is widely regarded as the best drum & bass LP of all time!
Ed Rush & Optical have since moved through three more critically acclaimed albums, ‘The Creeps’, ‘Original Doctor Shade’ and the incredible semi-live project ‘Chameleon’, all with their own individual styles and personalities. 2009 saw them tackle the release of their fifth long player, ‘Travel The Galaxy’ a project which once again proved them as true masters of their trade and many claimed was their best work since wormhole. The duo are currently working on their latest album a project which promises an eagerly awaited injection of that classic Virus future funk with a blend of today’s production techniques that will prove hard to resist.
Optical (Virus / Metalheadz | UK)
Optical (Virus Optical is the pseudonym of Matt Quinn, a renowned drum and bass producer and DJ from England.
He is best known for his work with Ed Rush, fellow head of the Virus Recordings label, and as a pioneer of the techstep and neurofunk sound. His first single for Metalheadz, ‘To Shape the Future’/’Raging Calm’ (1997) and his collaborative material with Ed Rush, such as the Wormhole, album (1998) were archetypal developments in the style. The duo followed this debut album with The Creeps (2000) and The Original Doctor Shade (2003), as well as countless singles and remixes.
He also notably did most of the engineering and production work for Grooverider’s album Mysteries of Funk, and Goldie’s ‘Saturns Return’ LP. In addition, he has produced solo, and released in collaboration with many artists, including Trace, Dom and Roland, Fierce, and his brother Matrix.
“Matt Quinn’s savage dance floor productions as Optical (for, among many others, Groove’s own label Prototype) have earned him a place in drum’n’bass’s premier division.”
Adred (Natural Selection | NY)
Born Adam Baker, son of a musically talented father and artistic mother, he was destined to be a great musician. Growing up listening to David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Thomas Dolby shaped his love for music at a young age. At the age of 16 Adam first heard Drum and Bass at a rave and wanted to replicate the energy and excitement he witnessed first hand. It wasn’t until years later when he had the opportunity to express it first by DJ’ing. At the age of 20, he bought his first set of turntables and a mixer. Quickly learning and understanding the techniques of mixing music, a year later he was given the opportunity to play out. He knew all along that he wanted to create his own music and that being a DJ wouldn’t be enough to set himself apart from rest of the world. Little did he know, that a chance meeting in a neighborhood record store would launch his career as a producer. He didn’t stop at Drum and Bass but ventured into Hip Hop, R&B, Techno, House and everything in between. He doesn’t believe in pigeonholing himself in one genre and always produces music by feeling and bpm. Currently he is working on multiple releases with Robert Manos in many different genres. Keep an eye out for him and these songs.
Rafael Salvador (Natural Selection / Fuzed Funk | NYC)
Music has been a major force in Rafael Salvador’s life from a very young age. A New Jersey native, his earliest musical memories include breakdancing in preschool and being exposed to jazz through his uncle’s tape collection. His roots as a DJ date back to Christmas 1994 when he was given a pair of turntables, a mixer and an eclectic selection of records. Going on to pursue DJ’ing as a hobby and collecting Hip Hop and House records throughout his high school years, the turning point in Salvador’s musical journey came in 2000 when he discovered Jungle Drum & Bass while attending college in Philadelphia. He later returned to the New York City area and interned at Hip Hop’s revered Fat Beats Records, where he contributed to album marketing campaigns and daily operations. This proved to be a valuable experience as he gained insight into the music business and met many of the artists that influenced him as a teen.
Having acquired a wealth of knowledge about music in both the creative and business aspects, Salvador is now playing a role in keeping New York City’s Jungle Drum & Bass scene vibrant and future-oriented. He co-launched the first Natural Selection party in June 2011 and quickly established it as one of the city’s premier Jungle Drum & Bass events. He has also stepped onto the DJ circuit recently, eager to share the music he’s collected over the past 20 years. An avid crate digger with an eclectic taste, his diverse sets are aimed to make you move.
